The following two statements are quite significant, and representative of many other remarks made by Bridgman.

carp: 투덜거리다, (명사) 잉어 

to complain in an annoying way

construe: ~을 해석하다,

 to understand (an action, event, remark, etc.) in a particular way

: to understand the meaning of (a word, phrase, or sentence)

1. The way the court construes various words has changed over time.
2. <the role of the justices of the Supreme Court in construing the constitution>

concoct: 

1. (특히 음식이나 음료를 이것저것 섞어) 만들다

The soup was concocted from up to a dozen different kinds of fish.

2.(이야기・변명 등을) 지어내다

: to invent or develop (a plan, story, etc.) especially in order to trick or deceive someone

untenable:(격식) 이론・입장 등이 방어[옹호]될 수 없는(지못미 같은 느낌)

not capable of being defended against attack or criticism : not tenable
